Record Crowds Expected for world’s largest historic motoring event

Record crowds are expected to turn out for Sunday’s historic Bay to Birdwood Run. The event first began in 1980 with 637 vehicles - a far cry from this year’s field that has attracted over 1500 pre-1956 vehicles.

The Run departs at 9am from Barratt Reserve Adelaide Shores (West Beach) and vehicles travel the 70-kilometre route (via Anzac Highway, Greenhill Road, Sir Lewis Cohen Drive, Grote Street, Wakefield Street to Dequetteville Terrace and Northcote Terrace onto North-east Road) to the National Motor Museum at Birdwood. It takes the cavalcade about two hours to pass any given point along the route.

Each year tens of thousands of spectators turn out to watch the cars, trucks, motor cycles and even fire engines from yesteryear pass them by. For many families and friends the last Sunday in September is a traditional time to meet and set up picnic sites or barbecues along the route.

This year the Adelaide City Council will host an event in Victoria Square with the Morris Men, Swingshift dance display and the Barbershop chorus entertaining onlookers as the vehicles drive by. The West Torrens City Council will provide a band and Mayoral farewell to entrants as they drive down West Beach Road at the start.

The public is invited to enjoy breakfast with the cars at the start at Adelaide Shores from 6am or take the alternate route and travel along the South-eastern Freeway to join in the festivities at Birdwood. The first entrant vehicles begin arriving at Birdwood from around 10.15am. There’s something for everyone at the Finish - from viewing the Concours d’ elegance entries and judging, to a full vintage entertainment program including dancing and fashion parades and with lots of goodies from Adelaide Hills Food and Wine region to eat and drink. A new exhibition “Great Journeys” will also go display at the National Motor Museum this Sunday.
