New Chairman for Bay to Birdwood

Mr Robert Gell has taken over as Chairman of South Australia’s prestige historic motoring event, the Bay to Birdwood. Mr Gell replaces His Honour Judge Kingsley Newman who has been chairman for almost 10 years.

In announcing his retirement Judge Newman said the event has so much to offer for South Australians and it is now recognised as the biggest and best historic motoring event to be held anywhere in the world. Having a love and passion for old cars, he has enjoyed his involvement as chairman and has wished Robert Gell every success for the future of this world class event. In welcoming the new chairman, Judge Newman said that with his experience and involvement in the corporate world, Robert Gell is just the person to take it to the next level.

Mr Gell whose appointment will take effect immediately has many years of experience working in the automotive industry. With a strong marketing background and personal interest in the heritage as both a collector and restorer of vintage and classic cars, Mr Gell says he recognises the need to make the event appeal to all motoring people as well as the general public. He plans to elevate the Bay to Birdwood to nationwide and international appeal and exposure. He is extremely excited with having the opportunity of moving the event forward to become one of SA’s icon major events.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the event and with 1750 vehicles expected for this years Bay to Birdwood Classic it is a far cry from the first Bay to Birdwood held in 1980 with a field of just 637 vehicles. Entries are now being received for this years Classic which takes place on Sunday September 25. Vehicles built from Jan 1, 1955 to December 31, 1975 are eligible to take part in this years event.
